Facebook Now Penalising Content Shared from Slower Websites

29 Aug, 2017

As Facebook continues to roll out updates to improve the user experiences of the platform - Facebook have recently announced their latest algorithm update which will see content shared from slower, non-mobile friendly sites penalised in News Feed rankings. This means that if your website has a slow load time or is not mobile responsive, your posts that direct back to your website will be placed lower in your follower’s news feeds – lowering your reach, impressions and potential engagements.

In a statement released by Facebook Engineers, Jiayi Wen and Shengbo Guo, Facebook have said - “We’re always listening to our community to understand how we can improve their experience of News Feed. We’ve heard from people that it’s frustrating to click on a link that leads to a slow-loading webpage. During the coming months we’re making an update to News Feed to show people more stories that will load quickly on mobile and fewer stories that might take longer to load, so they can spend more time reading the stories they find relevant.”

Facebook will be placing a higher value on content shared from websites that are engaging with best practice mobile responsiveness and maintenance activities. This content is more likely to show up in follower news feeds and closer to the top of the feed scroll.

What can you do to make sure your content is not penalised?

Ensuring that your website is mobile friendly and has a satisfactory load time is the best course of action. There are a number of factors that impact website load times, including your website’s server, redirects, plugins used on your site as well as end user connectivity.

An audit of your site’s performance will outline any immediate and suggested fixes that will ensure your Facebook content remains visible in your follower’s news feeds.
